Cyber Security
Protection of your information
HLS Legal prioritises the proactive protection of our electronic systems and customer data through the detection, analysis, and response to potential cyber threats and incidents.
We maintain a cyber security schedule incorporating the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, US) Cybersecurity Frameworks.
We strive to meet cyber security best practices, and work with industry leaders in cyber security who regularly audit, test and update our security measures, procedures, and policies. Our systems are checked and updated as part of our cyber safety program, and are regularly monitored.
The controls deployed include firewalls, encryption, multi-factor authentication, access control, malware detection, dark web detection, monitoring apps, application control and endpoint detection.
Our staff are also regularly trained and tested on various aspects of cyber security.
What you should know
Cyber criminals may try to scam you by impersonating us through emails, text messages, phone calls or social media.
This may be in attempt to gain access to your money and private information.
If you are suspicious of any email, text message, or other electronic correspondence that you receive from us, please do not action the request in that communication.
Immediately report any such communications by contacting us via phone on (08) 9322 5202.
Payment security measures
To help protect you when dealing with your money, we endeavour to:
- Tell you at the start of a matter what our payment details are, and we will not change those details unless we speak to you first.
- Authenticate and verify email instructions from you in relation to where money should be sent by verifying it with you over the phone (especially in respect of any trust monies held).
For your own security, we ask that you please:
- Never respond to an email requesting that you deposit money into a bank account that is different from the account we gave you.
- Contact us by phone immediately if you receive an email of this nature by calling (08) 9322 5202.
We will not email or text you with links requiring you to log-in into portals to make a payment to us.
Basic cyber-crime prevention tips
- Keep your computer and software up to date with the latest security patches installed, and install anti-virus software;
- Use strong, long and complex passwords;
- Use different passwords for each service, so if one is compromised, all are not compromised;
- Use multi-factor authentication where it is available;
- Maintain an awareness for fraudulent emails;
- Avoid accessing personal data on unsecured networks like public wi-fi;
- Don’t respond to suspicious emails that ask for personal information; and
- Carefully check the sender’s email address and don’t click on attachments or links embedded in emails from people you don’t know.
